The "Shikigami-gai-gata" (two rectangular pieces of colored paper placed one on top of the other) seems to be a favorite shape in Japan. I drew a nice checkered pattern.
The "checkerboard pattern" was named after Ichimatsu Sagawa of the Edo Nakamura-za theater, who wore a hakama with this pattern in 1741 and became famous. It is a pattern that is very popular in Edo.
